The PK9 chair, also referred to as the ‘Tulip chair’ due to its shape, was designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1960. Kjærholm experimented with moulds whilst focusing on finding the perfect shape for the chair. He originally used his wife, Hanne Kjærholm, by asking her to create an imprint of her behind in the sand. Poul Kjærholm then developed this idea by sitting in clay to create moulds of himself, with the intention to discover the prime position of comfort. This process in the design of the PK9 chair ensures that the chair is extremely comfortable and supportive of the body. The chair also has a very unique shape, although it has a simplistic appearance. Three pieces of satin-brushed stainless steel are joint to create the stem of the chair, then curved at the bottom to act as the legs and base for the leather seat. The seat is formed of leather and fully upholstered for the ultimate comfort.
