In the 1950s, Knoll gave Harry Bertoia free rein to form seating proposals out of wire mesh. Though half a dozen of the sculptor's airy creations went on to become best-sellers, the undulating Asymmetric Chaise model proved too difficult and costly to realize at the time and thus never went into production.
In 2004, one of the chaise's prototypes came up for auction in Chicago, but, before it was sold for $118,000, Knoll commissioned a CAD documentation of its curves and put the chaise into production for the first time in 2005. To produce each chaise, Knoll artisans in Italy spend two days hand-welding the metal wires.
