The Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Chair is undoubtedly an iconic piece of furniture, encompassing an architectural structure with comfort and beauty. Mies van der Rohes style of construction was no doubt built from his experience in construction and work with a furniture designer. After being commissioned to design the Barcelona Pavillion, Mies van der Rohe became known for the detail and precision of his work. The Barcelona Chair was designed to complement the Barcelona Pavillion he had designed, intended to act as a type of throne for the King and Queen when they visited. Mies van der Rohe continued this artistic sense of perfection in his work as he became director of the Bauhaus, a leader of an American architectural institute and the renowned designer of the Farnsworth House in Illinois and the Seagram Building skyscraper in New York.
The rights to manufacture the Barcelona Chair and Ottoman were gained by Knoll International in 1948. The elegant frame of the chair is formed from two pieces of steel welded together and delicately hand finished to ensure a smooth, high-quality appearance.
