The Eames Lounge Chair was designed in 1956 by Charles and Ray Eames, and is now manufactured by Vitra. It is now a classic of modern contemporary design that people wish to own for many years, and gain tremendous pleasure from handing it down to future generations. The design of the chair was inspired by the traditional English club chair, and by a soft, comfortable baseball glove. Due to the incredible quality of materials and craftsmanship, the Eames Lounge Chair is hard wearing and still looks like new after years of use in the family home.
Choose from Santos Palisander, black- or white-pigmented walnut, black ash, or cherry shells, and a range of sumptuous leathers. It is hard to beat the classic combination, true to the original design, of a dark wood veneer and black leather.
Santos Palisander is the closest to the original design, when the Eameses specified a Brazilian rosewood shell and black leather. The Lounge Chair is now also available in a larger version that allows maximum comfort for taller people.

The following version is available on Quickship: chair and ottoman in black leather, base in polished / sides black.
The original species of rosewood could not be used long term as it joined the endangered species list. But Vitra were able to find a sustainable replacement: Santos Palisander, which is a stunning wood with lots of warmth and grain detail. The final choice you have is in the base detail. Again, the classic option is to select the polished base with black sides, giving a very subtle finish which sits well with black leather. The other options for the base are: chromed with a mirror finish, or polished (without the black sides). Please feel free to discuss the various options for the Lounge chair with us before you order.

Charles and Ray Eames understood design to be a continuous process one that did not end when production began. The main goal of the Eames Lounge Chair was to offer users maximum comfort. Since the Lounge Chair went into production more than 50 years ago, the height of the average human depending on region has increased by as much as 10 cm. To enable larger people to experience exceptional comfort when sitting, Vitra has in coordination with the Eames Office adjusted the dimensions of the Lounge Chair. In doing so, the proportions of the seat and back shells were carefully extended in such a way that the overall visual appearance of the Eames Lounge Chair seems to hardly have changed at all.
